Suzuri Cutlery Rest square

by Studio GALA, designed by Ryoichi Kobayashi

This cutlery rest is made of a unique type of =Suzuri stone= called Gensho Stone which is clay slate formed a few hundred million years ago. Gensho Stone has a natural sheen and deep black colour, that imbues each rest with an air of refinement. Suzuri stones are famously used as =calligraphy inkwells=. Since the old times, Suzuri has been one of the essential tools for writing. Each item is carefully =handmade= in the Ogatsu area of Miyagi, northern Japan. Ogatsu is well known for the quality of its stone since the Muromachi Era (1336-1573). However, this area was hugely damaged by the tsunami in 2011. Since then, Suzuri has been making a gradual recovery.
