Suzuri Cutlery Rest square

by Studio GALA, designed by Ryoichi Kobayashi

This cutlery rest is made of a unique type of Suzuri stone called Gensho Stone which is clay slate formed a few hundred million years ago. Gensho Stone has a natural sheen and deep black colour, that imbues each rest with an air of refinement. Suzuri stones are famously used as calligraphy inkwells. Since the old times, Suzuri has been one of the essential tools for writing. Each item is carefully handmade in the Ogatsu area of Miyagi, northern Japan. Ogatsu is well known for the quality of its stone since the Muromachi Era (1336-1573). However, this area was hugely damaged by the tsunami in 2011. Since then, Suzuri has been making a gradual recovery.
